Today is the birth anniversary of Mangal Pandey, a sepoy in the 34th Bengal Native Infantry Regiment of the British East India Company who spearheaded the ‘Sepoy Mutiny’ which coupled with other factors led to the great uprising of the Indian Masses against the British Regime known as the 1857 First War of Independence. Regarded as a hero of the Independence Movement, a Postal Stamp was issued by Government of India , in his honour in 1984.A movie “The Rising” based on his exploits and heroism was released in 2005.
