REMEMBERING PRIYA RAJVANSH

Today is the death anniversary of Priya Rajvansh, the popular Bollywood heroine.
Born Vera Sunder Singh in a Sikh family in Shimla, Priya was brought up and educated in Shimla. She was an alumnus of Auckland House School Shimla, where she was a School Captain , and also of Convent of Jesus & Mary , Shimla. . She did her Intermediate from St.Bede’s College Shimla and later joined the local B.M. College .During her College days , she acted in many English plays at Gaiety Theatre. Her acting skills were honed among others by Prof. G.R.Sud, who many years later also taught me at the University.Subsequently, after graduation she went to London where her father was on a U.N. assignment. She joined the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts at London.

While still in England, one of her photographs reached the Indian Film Industry and Chetan Anand on seeing it , later signed her for 1964 flick Haqeeqat , a famous war movie till date. In a personal live in relationship with Chetan Anand, she starred in his movies and got involved in other aspects of film making besides acting . She was seen playing lead roles in Heer Ranjha, Hanste Jakham , Hindustan ki Kasam, Kudrat , Sahib Bahadur and Haathon ki Lakeeren.

I remember, in late seventies, on a holiday, probably a Sunday, I rushed to Chhota Shimla, to a place where shooting of Chetan Anand film Kudrat was going on . It was a shoot for a scene from dance-chorus number- Sawan Nahin Bhadon Nahin- with Rajesh Khanna and Priya Rajvansh in the lead . Priya wore a red dress with makeup to match and Rajesh Khanna, in a combination suit with spotted yellow tie was his usual smartest self.
She died this day in 2000 under mysterious circumstances .

Our humble tributes to the talented actress !
