दीवाली

खील , बतासे, चीनी से बने रंग बिरंगे या सफ़ेद खिलौने , अखबार के कागज़ में लिपटी व छक्कू में रखी मिठाई, छोटे मोटे बम, फुलझड़ियाँ, अनार, पटाखे, ऑटोमैटिक पिस्तौल जिसमे पटाखे की लड़ी चलती थी, एक जोड़ा नए कपड़े- कोई दिखावा नहीं, कोई होड़ नहीं- मेरे बचपन की दीवाली क्या खूब थी !

The Good Old days

My school i.e. S.D .Higher Secondary School, Shimla, where I studied fifth class on wards till eleventh, is situated in Ganj Bazar or Anaj Mandi as some people would call it. Both Lower Bazar and Ram Bazar are nearby, and so were the Shahi Cinema below Ram bazaar and the Rivoli Cinema across the Lower Bazaar tunnel , the road leading to the Lakaar bazaar bus stand from where buses to upper Shimla and Kinnaur and some local areas are available. The recess time was spent in moving about in either of these two places. From Lower Bazar we used to purchase books and stationery items , where as Ram Bazar , with some suitable spots available then , was seasonally abuzz with some Pathan with his wares spread out on a sheet and a raised illustrated cloth chart towards which he pointed with a long wooden stick to the pictures of wild animals in the high mountains from whom the medicine material was obtained and alternately to the containers in which medicines were kept. As a pastime I also would stand among the onlookers , not catching even an iota of what he said. However the cleverer fellow students told us that he sold potency medicines. No longer such scenes are available , with some regular and other make shift shops having come up on both sides of the road right up to the spot where the road joins the circular road near the old bus stand.Now one has to literally elbow and jostle through to reach Old Bus Stand via Ram Bazar.
Another star attraction was an occasional juggler showing his tricks to the public gathered around. This really interested me, as whatever five or six tricks I happened to watch came handy while writing an essay on ‘ The Juggler’s Show’ as a school assignment .Needless to say this original presentation always fetched me good marks.

K.R.Narayanan

Today is the birth anniversary of K.R.Narayanan ,a former President of India. An alumnus of London School of Economics,on return to India, he joined the Indian Foreign Service at the instance of Prime Minister Nehru and became a career diplomat.He served as a diplomat in various embassies and was also the Indian Ambassador to Thailand, China & Turkey.Post retirement he served as Ambassador to US.After joining politics he was an MP of the Lok Sabha thrice and served as a Minister of State in the Union Government.He served a tenure as the Vice Chancellor of JNU.
He stood out in all assignments he held.

Pradeep Kumar

Today is the death anniversary of Pradeep Kumar, the noted Bollywood actor. With his impressive looks, nothing short of regal , he was an easy choice to pick to play the role of a King, a Prince or an aristocrat and he enacted these roles with e'lan.
Starting his career as a theatre artist,he was first cast in a Bengali movie Alaknanda . The '50s and '60s saw him working with all the top heroines of the times like Nimmi, Nutan, Vaijyantimala, Meena Kumari, Bina Rai, Geeta Bali, Mala Sinha and Nargis and he paired well with them. Somehow his teaming with Madhubala, another leading heroine did not meet with much success. He acted in popular hits like Anarkali, Naagin, Aarti, Taj Mahal , Raat Aur Din,Rajhath Noorjahan , Sanjog, Baadshah, Bheegi Raat , Meri Soorat Teri Aankhen , Adalat, Bahu Begum,Bandhan, Jagte Raho, Many popular songs, whether solo or duet, were picturised on him . He had also his lean period and almost remained eclipsed for years. His comeback film was Razia Sultan in which he appeared in 1983 and acted as an emperor.
He died this day in 2001 aged 76.

गणेश शंकर विद्यार्थी

आज महान स्वतन्त्रता सेनानी, पत्रकार-संपादक- प्रकाशक, समाजसेवी एवं विचारक स्व. गणेश शंकर विद्यार्थी की जयंती है। अपनी निर्भीक पत्रकारिता व ओजस्वी लेखों के माध्यम से स्वतन्त्रता आंदोलन में क्रांतिकारियों और अहिंसावादी गांधी समर्थकों को समान समर्थन दे कर विद्यार्थी जी ने एक ऐतिहासिक भूमिका निभाई ।

अपने जीवन के 41वें वर्ष में ही इस संसार को अलविदा कहने वाले इस महापुरुष को हमारी विनम्र श्रद्धांजलि !

Sahir Ludhianvi

Today is the death anniversary of Abdul Hayi, better known as Sahir Ludhianvi, the great Urdu poet and lyricist.Deftly handling the two diametrically opposite strands of thought i.e. Love & Revolution- Ishq & Inqalaab, Sahir with the beautiful use of words and images, raised poetry to a very high level.
Tu Hindu banega na Mussalman banega, Insaan Ki aulad hai Insaan banega....
Ye mahalon ye takhton ye taajon ki duniya
Ye insaan ke dushman samajon Ki duniya
.........................................
Ye duniya agar mil bhi jaye to kya hai.. ...
Jinhen naaz hai hind par wo kahan hain.....
Speak of his secular credentials and unrest with the existing system.
One one hand he is all praise for the Taj Mahal as a symbol of immortal love and on the other, he sees Taj as a monument mocking at the love of poor people
Turning a rebel due to feudalistic beliefs of his father, he stood by his mother throughout.

The poignant feelings in his poetry also stem from unrequited love that he experienced in his own life and did not marry.

साहिर लुधियानवी

उर्दू के अज़ीम शाइर और हिन्दी सिनेमा के लोकप्रिय और विख्यात गीतकार साहिर लुधियानवी की आज पुण्यतिथि है ।इश्क़ और इन्क़लाब के दो परस्पर विरोधी विचारों को केंद्र में रख कर व दोनों को अपनी अद्भुत लेखनी से उत्कृष्ट अभिव्यक्ति दे कर साहिर ने उर्दू साहित्य और हिन्दी सिनेमा जगत में अपनी विशिष्ट पहचान बनाई ।
फिल्म ‘धूल का फूल’ के लिए ‘तू हिन्दू बनेगा न मुसलमान बनेगा, इंसान की औलाद है , इंसान बनेगा ....’ जैसा कालजयी गीत लिख कर अपनी उदात्त धर्म निरपेक्ष विचारधारा का परिचय दिया ।
उनके गीत व ग़ज़लें यथा:
ये महलों ये तख़तों ये ताजों की दुनिया
ये ईंसान के दुश्मन समाजों की दुनिया
ये दौलत के भूखे रिवाजों की दुनिया
ये दुनिया अगर मिल भी जाए तो क्या है .....

जिन्हें नाज़ है हिन्द पर वो कहाँ हैं .....
में मौजूदा व्यवस्था से उनका मोहभंग व इसमे परिवर्तन की आवश्यकता परिलक्षित होती है।
पर ऐसा भी नहीं है कि उनने उम्मीद का दामन छोड़ दिया है, भविष्य के प्रति आशावान हो, वे लिखते हैं-
'वो सुबह कभी तो आएगी........'

अपनी गज़ल/गीत ‘ रंग और नूर की बारात किसे पेश करूँ, ये मुरादों की हसीं रात किसे पेश करूँ’ में जहां वे एक प्रेमी के उद्गार प्रस्तुत करते हैं , वहीं एक और गीत की पंक्ति ‘ भूख और प्यास की मारी हुई इस दुनिया में, इश्क़ ही एक हक़ीक़त नहीं कुछ और भी है...’ में ठोस धरातल पर जीवन की सच्चाईयों को बयां करते हुए मिलते हैं। दोनों विपरीत स्थितियाँ उन्हें उद्वेलित करती हैं। ‘ कभी कभी मेरे दिल में खयाल आता है’ में प्रेम की पराकाष्ठा नज़र आती है, तो ‘मैं पल दो पल का शायर हूँ ...’ में जीवन की क्षणभंगुरता का परिचय मिलता है।गरज ये कि साहिर ने अपनी शायरी में जीवन के हर पहलू को बखूबी छूआ है। ‘औरत ने जनम दिया मरदों को, मरदों ने उसे बाज़ार दिया’ गीत में एक कड़वी सच्चाई से रूबरू करवाते हैं।
स्त्री के प्रति सहानुभूति उनके अपनी माँ के प्रति श्रद्धा से उपजी प्रतीत होती है, जिसकी पृष्ठभूमि में कहीं उनके पिता की सामंतवादी और जमींदाराना सोच के प्रति उनका विरोध है।
मशहूर लेखिका व कवयित्रि अमृता प्रीतम ने साहिर के प्रति अपने प्रेम का इज़हार बेबाकी से किया है , तो गायिका सुधा मल्होत्रा ने अपने मुकेश के साथ गाए साहिर द्वारा रचे गीत ‘ तुम मुझे भूल भी जाओ तो ये हक हैं तुमको ...’ को संगीतबद्ध करके भावनाओं को खूब उकेरा है।
साहिर के बारे में जितना लिखा जाए वो कम है ।

इस अज़ीम शायर को हमारी विनम्र श्रद्धांजलि !
