Today is the birth anniversary of Honorary Captain Bhandari Ram, Victoria Cross . He was born this day in 1919 in a village in the present day Bilaspur district of Himachal Pradesh. A sepoy in the British Indian Army and serving in the 10th Baloch Regiment, he exhibited extraordinary bravery and valour while fighting Japanese forces somewhere on the Burma front during the Second World War.
He was awarded Victoria Cross for this rare feat.
Post independence he served in the Dogra Regiment of the Indian Army till his retirement in 1969.
