REMEMBERING GEETA DUTT

Today is the death anniversary of Geeta Dutt, a talented Bollywood singer who was the wife of renowned actor, producer and director Guru Dutt. Born Geeta Ganguli Rai Chaudhuri, in undivided Bengal , the family shifted to Calcutta and Assam and then to Dadar Bombay .
She learnt singing from K. Hanuman Prasad .In the beginning she was given only two lines to sing in each song . She got break in 1947 when she sang for the film Do Bhai . The song – mera sunder sapna beet gaya- became an instant hit. Another song – yaad karoge yaad karoge, ik din humko yaad karoge- was sung in a mature voice belying her age of seventeen years at that time. In all she recorded more than 1200 songs in Hindi only, apart from the songs she recorded in Bengali , Maithili and other Indian languages. .Suited to her voice, singing sad songs was her USP , though she sang romantic numbers as well .She sang Bhajans and devotional songs also. She sang for all notable music directors, viz. S.D.Burman, Hemant Kumar, Madan Mohan and O.P.Nayyar.
"Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya", "Tadbir Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana Le","Aan Milo Aan Milo Shyam Baware", "Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Lagalo”, "Hum Aap Ke Aankhon Main", "Nanhi Kali Sone Chali Hawa Dhire Aana","Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam" (S.D.Burman )
"Babuji Dhire Chalna","Jaane Kahan Mera Jigar Gaya Ji","Jaata Kahan Hai","Aye Dil Hain Mushkil","Mera Naam Chin Chin Chu","Kaisa Jadoo Balam Tune Dara" ( O.P.Nayyar )
"Jai Jagadish Hare","Na Jaao Saiyaan Chhuda Ke Baiyaan","Na Yeh Chand Ho Ga","Piya Aiso Jiya Mein Samaye Gayo","Chale Aao Chale Aao" ( Hemant Kumar)
"Aye Dil Mujhe Bata De' (Madan Mohan)
"Mujhe Jaan Nah Kaho Meri Jaan" , "Mera Dil Jo Mera Hota", ( Kanu Roy )
"Ghunghat Ke Pat Khol"- a bhajan from film ‘Jogan’ .
- are some of her notable melodies.
Despite a break up of marriage, Geeta Dutt remained firmly rooted in her devotion to Guru Dutt . I remember, she remembered and talked about Guru Dutt and his films only while presenting a program on Vividh Bharti.
Our humble tributes to this highly talented but less discussed and talked about singer !
