Ravi- Music Director

Today is the death annive
rsary of Ravi, the popular and highly talented composer and music director of Hindi & Malayalam Cinema.
Born Ravi Shankar Sharma on 3 March,1926 in Delhi, he had no formal training in music  and he used to practice the songs  and bhajans sung by his father.He learnt to play harmonium and worked as an electrician to support the family. His interest in music took him to Bombay, where he was homeless for quite long and spent nights at a railway station. For the first time, he was spotted by composer Hemant Kumar, who made him sing in the famous Vande Mataram song in the 1952 film Anand Math.
Once his career took off, he scored wonderful music and melodies for hits like Chaudahavin Ka Chaand, Do Badan, Humraaz, Waqt, Khandan, Neel Kamal, Aankhen Gumraah and many many others.
He helped boost the singing career of Asha Bhosle and Mahendra Kapoor.
His filmography also includes films like Ghoonghat, Gharana, Grihasthi, Aurat, Samaaj Ko Badal Dalo, Bharosa,Albeli, Vachan,Ek Saal, Barsi Bhagat, DillicJa Thug,Dulhan , Ghar Sansar , Mehandi, Rakhi, Do kaliyan,Gumraah, Anmol Moti & Ek Phool Do Mali.Taking a break from film music for 12 years between 1970 and 1982, he scored  music for the film Nikaah in 1982 and the Salma Agha song 'Dekh Ke Armaan Ansuon Mein Beh Gaye' hit popularity charts.
He won the National Award for the Best Music Director twice for Malayalam Films and Filmfare Award for two Hindi films.He paired well with Hari haran, the Malayalam film director and together they gave many hits.
He died this day in 2012,aged 86.
