REMEMBERING HASRAT JAIPURI

Today is the birth anniversary of Hasrat Jaipuri, a well known, popular and acclaimed Urdu poet and a lyricist for Hindi Cinema. Making his debut as a lyricist with Raj Kapoor’s famous film ‘Barsaat’, he gave many memorable songs to Hindi Cinema. His first recorded song was Jiya Beqaraar Hai( Lata Mangeshkar) and first duet , Chhod Gaye Baalam (Mukesh & Lata)- both from the film ‘Barsaat’ .Both these songs are popular even today. His other notable songs among numerous others are Pankh Hote to Ud Jati re (Sehra), Tere Khayalon Mein Hum (Geet Gaya Patharon Ne) Duniya Banane Wale (Teesri Kasam),Ajhoon Na Aye Baalma( Saanjh aur Sawera ),Sun Sahiba Sun (Ram Teri Ganga Maili),Yeh mera Prem Patra Parh Kar (Sangam) & Tere man ki Ganga(Sangam) .

These two songs from film ‘Sangam’ were actually penned by him for his Hindu ladylove quite a few years back.It seems he enjoyed some wavelength with Shailendra, another lyricist of note, and together they wrote lyrics for the same films also. He won Filmfare’s best lyricist award for the songs Zindagi Ik safar Hai Suhana & Baharo Phool Barsao, Mera Mehboob Aya hai. He was also awarded Dr. Ambedkar Award for the semi classical number Jhanak Jhanak Tori Baaje Payaliya. 

He wrote all types of songs- romantic, semi classic, sad, serious etc. etc.
