Today is the birth anniversary of Suchitra Sen, the renowned actress of Bengali and Hindi cinema.Born Roma Dasgupta this
day in 1931 at Pabna in undivided Bengal,she was a leading actress for close to three decades, during '50s through '70s.
Predominantly associated with Bengali cinema, her movies in which she paired with Uttam Kumar went down well with the public and became instant hits.It is worth mentioning that 30 of her 60 films were with Uttam Kumar.
In Hindi cinema she is remembered most for her role in films Bombay ka Babu, Devdas, Mamta and Aandhi in which her performance was stellar.She was the first Indian actress to be Internationally acclaimed and awarded in the 1963 Moscow International Festival, where she won a Silver Medal for her outstanding performance in a movie titled Saptapadi.
She was awarded Padma Shri in 1972.She withdrew from public life 1979 onwards and is said to have refused Dadasaheb Phalke Award to avoid public gaze and adulation.
She had a strong screen presence and believed in giving her best.
It is said that she took lessons in Hindi diction for her role in Aandhi .
She died on 17 January 2014 .
