Today is the death anniversary of Naik ( later Subedar Major ) Gian Singh. He was awarded Victoria Cross , the highest Gallantry award for the British & the Commonwealth for exhibiting extraordinary valour, tact and presence of mind while fighting the Japanese forces on the Burma Front during the Second World War.He was injured in the arm during the war. He was serving as a Naik in the 15th Punjab Regiment at that time. Post independence , he was assigned to the Sikh Regiment and saw action in the Indo-China war of 1962. The Indian Government also awarded him the Param Vishisht Sewa Medal for meritorious service. He died on October 6, 1996 aged 81.
