Today is the death anniversary of Leela Naidu, the film actress.Born of an Indian father and an Irish mother of Swiss-French origin , she was a combination of beauty, elegance & sophistication and imbibed the best of Indian and Western culture.Educated in the best institutions of Europe , on return to India ,she won the Miss India pageant in 1954.She along with Maharani Gayatri Devi was listed among the ten most beautiful women of the world.
Entering the film line, she acted in movies like Yeh Raaste Hain Pyaar Ke, Anuradha,and Umeed. She also appeared in The Householder, a Merchant- Ivory production.The songs picturised on her became very popular.It is on record that she was the first choice for heroine in the film Guide but lost to Waheeda Rehman, as the role demanded an accomplished dancer.She left her mark as a nuanced and subtle actress.
