Today is the birth anniversary of Dr. Jivraj Narayan Mehta – Jivraj Mehta for short- a renowned medical practitioner educated home and abroad. He later turned a freedom fighter also remained for sometime a private physician to Mahatma Gandhi. Founder of many medical institutions of repute in India, he made immense contribution to medical research in India . Thrice elected President of the All India Medical Congress, he was also a President of the Indian Medical Association.
He was the first Chief Minister of newly carved state of Gujarat from 1960 to 1963. He served as the Indian High Commissioner to the U.K. from 1963 to 1966.
Lately an award has been instituted in his name which is awarded to outstanding medical practitioners. He was awarded Padma Vibhushan in 1972.
