Today is the birth anniversary of Jaidev, the popular Music Director of Hindi films. Born Jaidev Verma this day in Nairobi, Kenya in 1919 ,he was brought up at Ludhiana. At the age of 15 he ran away to Bombay to fulfil his dream of becoming a film star and acted in some films as a child artiste and learnt some music also. He had to return to Ludhiana to take up family responsibilities when his father turned blind.He got his sister settled in married life.After his father's death he went to Lucknow in 1943 and learnt music from Ustad Ali Akbar Khan.
He went to Bombay again and as an assistant to Ali Akbar Khan, he composed music for Aandhiyaan and Humsafar.Later he became assistant to S.D.Burman , his first film with him being Taxi Driver.
His first success as an independent composer came with the film Hum Dono , the solo Main Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya ,Kabhi Khud Pe Kabgi Haalaat Pe Rona Aya & the duet Abhi Na Jao Chhod Kar becoming instant hits. Earlier he had also composed music for Chetan Anand's Joru Ka Bhai & Anjali.
Later he composed music for Mujhe Jeene Do, Reshma Aur Shera , Gaman, Thi Reeta, Parinay, Alaap,Kinare Kinare,Gharonda,Ankahee and many others.It is to his credit that even when some of the films did not do well at the box office, the songs became and remain popular, thanks to the music.He also set to music Harivansh Rai Bachchan's Madhushala, recited by Manna Dey.
He was the first Music Director to win three National Awards.
He died a bachelor on January 6, 1987 .
